Chris Paul and Every National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) President
Posted by Vin Getz
Chris Paul has been elected the new president of the National Basketball Players Association, taking over for Derek Fisher, who headed the union for (nearly) the last seven years – since November of 2006 – and through the 2011 lockout that resulted in the shortened (66-game) 2011-12 season.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported on the “transfer of power,”
“Paul, a vice president on the union’s executive board for the past four years, is the biggest star to lead the group since Patrick Ewing in 2001. He begins his 18-month term replacing Derek Fisher, who had been president since 2006, with the NBPA in turmoil after 18 months of in-fighting, firings and lawsuits.”
The NBPA is not a new organization. It’s been around since the 1950’s. Bob Cousy and Tom Heinsohn of the great Boston Celtics dynasty were the first two presidents.
Below, find every NBPA president. Those who presided over work stoppages (lockouts and strikes) are noted with an asterisk.
