The Oakland Raiders are the Most Penalized NFL Team So Far this Season and of the Past Five Seasons. What Else Is New?

The bad boy Oakland Raiders are the most penalized NFL team of the past five years (plus the first 10 weeks of this season). They are the only team to breach the 700-penalty mark over that time and are way ahead of second-place Dallas.

The Raiders are in a penalty league of their own.

On the other end of the list, it’s the Atlanta Falcons, and Bill Belichick‘s New England Patriots with the fewest penalties in the past half-decade.

Thanks to my source, The Football Database, where you can see the breakdown by year.

Major League Baseball: Teams and Players with the Most Cycles

Two of These Players (Bob Meusel, Lou Gehrig) Hit For the Cycle Multiple Times. Not the Guy on the Right.

Two of These Players (Bob Meusel, Lou Gehrig) Hit For the Cycle Multiple Times. Not the Guy on the Right.

Scott Hairston became the 10th player in New York Mets history to hit for the cycle last night. It was the 298th time a cycle – a single, double, triple and home run in one game – has been hit.

But not by 298 different players. Some had more than one.

Three players hit for the cycle three times, that’s the most.

Then, you have a bunch of guys who did it twice. That’s still mighty nice.

In total, 27 players have hit for the cycle more than once, including greats like Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, to name two. Here are all 27 in today’s list.

And if you want to see which franchise has the most cycles, the number of cycles for every franchise, a full list of every cycle ever hit (including dates and box scores), and other offbeat cycle stats (like cycles with inside-the-park home runs, grand slams or in natural order, etc.) check out my sources, mlb.com, baseball-almanac.com (NL, AL, Offbeat), and yes I did this time, wikipedia, who did a bang-up job.

Ozzie Guillen Traded to Florida Marlins: Guillen and Other Manager Trades

Ozzie Guillen Managed the 2005 Chicago White Sox to the World Series Title

Ozzie Guillen Managed the 2005 Chicago White Sox to the World Series Title (latino.foxnews.com)

Chicago White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen has been traded to the Florida (to be Miami in 2012) Marlins.  The Sox will get two minor leaguers in return.  What?

It happens, and not only in baseball.

Here are the five other baseball trades involving managers I’ve tracked down thanks to hardballtimes.com and seattlepi.com.

1. 2002 – Seattle Mariners trade Lou Piniella to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for Randy Winn (OF) and a minor leaguer.

2. 1976 – Oakland A’s trade Chuck Tanner and $100K to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Manny Sanguillen (C).

3. 1967 – Washington Senators trade Gil Hodges to the New York Mets for Bill Denehy and cash.

4. 1960 – Cleveland Indians trade Joe Gordon to the Detroit Tigers for Jimmy Dykes (Manager).

5. 1960 – Chicago Cubs trade Charlie Grimm to radio station WGN for announcer and former player and manager,  Lou Boudreau.

If you know of any other trades involving baseball managers, let me know!
