The 10 Highest-Scoring and 10 Lowest-Scoring Super Bowls

Super Bowl XXIX, Featuring The San Francisco 49ers And San Diego Chargers, Was The Highest Scoring Of Them All

Super Bowl XXIX, Featuring The San Francisco 49ers And San Diego Chargers, Was The Highest Scoring Of Them All

So, what’s the over/under for Super Bowl XLIX? It’s 47.5 right now (and live, here). Twenty of the 48 Super Bowls played saw combined point totals of 48 or more, including the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013 seasons. Will the trend continue?

Not sure. But, as the recent signs point out, it’s more likely that Sunday’s game between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks will tally a score closer to today’s first list – the highest scoring Super Bowls – than to our second list – the lowest scoring.

Forty-eight points is nice and all, but in Super Bowl XXIX, Steve Young‘s San Francisco 49ers and Stan Humphries‘ (what?) San Diego Chargers combined for a whopping 75 points, the most ever. It’s the only time the Big Game breached the 70-point barrier.

Another seven Super Bowls saw offensive explosions of 60 points or more.

What about the flip side? There’s never really been a very low scoring Super Bowl. No field goal-ruled scores like 9-6 or 12-3. In fact, every single Super Bowl has had at least two touchdowns (you can see all SB TD’s here (Part I) and here (Part II)).

The lowest scoring Super Bowl of them all was VII, when the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins combined for three touchdowns and 21 points.
